Hydrogen Safety

HYDROGEN SAFETY

  • Common misconception that hydrogen gas is inherently volatile and unsafe
  • H2 gas is actually safer than gasoline and as safe as natural gas
  •  – When ignited, burns quickly with low heat, highly directional flame
  •  – Very unlikely to explode
  • 1937 Hindenburg disaster is widely misunderstood
  •  – No explosion and nobody aboard was killed by hydrogen fire
  •  – 35% were killed by jumping, or from burning diesel oil, cloth canopy and debris
  •  – 65% survived and rode the dirigible down with clear hydrogen flames swirling harmlessly above them
  • Significant history and experience safely generating and using hydrogen
